Back from my trip!! EDIT: A more detailed account.

Sun Jul 12, 2009, 12:18 PM
  • Mood: Optimism
  • Listening to: my bird chirping away.
  • Reading: a heartbreaking work of staggering genuis?
  • Watching: these letters appear on the screen... Whoooooa o.O
  • Drinking: coffeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
So, I now have a horrendous number of photos to upload... But I also now have the whole summer to do it so I guess it's okay. I'm really impressed with some of my new shots. The colors especially are really striking. I think I got more wildlife than land or sea scape shots though x] Mostly marine life, some underwater (not taken underwater, but the subjects were underwater... Surprisingly they turned out :o). I'm really excited to get them up for you all to see =D

And yes, I'm sorry, but there still will be a whole gallery's-worth of old photos being put up. I like having a time-line XD

<edit>
Well, the weather was abysmal, the bay was constantly shrouded in fog, and low tide was always just high enough to make dry pictures of the starfish impossible. And I loved it =D I probably took more pictures in this tiny little inlet than I've taken anywhere else in my life. The mist made even the dreariest of days perfect for photographing, and the birds, sea anenomes, starfish, and stray dogs and cats that littered the area acted as perfect models. Paw and hoof prints preserved in the sand, along with the waves rolling and thundering (depending on where we were) across the beaches reflected beautifully the serenity, fragility, and the natural power and force of this region. I honestly would like to go back just to photograph the people! There's something about the coast that makes people age in the most beautiful of ways... Our watertaxi captain had one of the most beautiful faces I'd ever seen, with eyes that reflected the turquoise blue waters of the caribbean from half a world away. And I fell in love with a labradoodle youngster who decided he'd be my tour guide for a day x] The most photogenic of dogs existed near the Marine Science Center however, and his photos I'm particularly excited to have recieved by dA :) Along with the stares of the stray cats who take refuge at The Cat House, a small plot of land decorated with hand built and painted mini houses and barns, where the homeless can be sheltered from the winds and waters, and are fed daily out of the charity of one caring citizen and the odd donation from tourists.

The area is 100 km away from any cities and, essentially, modern civilization. There's barely any cell service, and internet is non-existent for most people there. They have a doctor who flies in once a week for appointments. Half of the population (300 people) is made up of university students pursuing marine biology who take courses at the Center for half the year, and also natives who have remained along the inner shores. Stepping into our little cottage felt like stepping back in time, our bunk beds creaking throughout the night as we shifted, trying to get comfy in slim sleeping bags and sunken pillows. We made all of our own meals, the odd time walking down to the Bistro for a drink in the afternoon :) One man (our captain), still used the brute force of marbles and a sling shot to keep dogs off of his property! (I have to admit, I highly disliked him at first just due to this fact, but looking back, I do believe he was one of the most sane people there.)

And of course, there were some beautiful boats... Also some not-so-beautiful ones :XD: And we met many nice people who I hope to not forget for a while :) Next time however, we'll have to visit the more heavily populated side I think, and try and find a place to sample the fresh sea food, we stopped at another coastal city on the way back to do so, but it wasn't quite the same... Fantastically delicious nonetheless though (I hadn't had crab in probably ten years! =D).

Anybody else taken any wonderfully rewarding, artistically fulfilling trips lately? My only disappointment is that I know that even the most skilled photographer, in my honest opinion, could not capture the real beauty of where we were... So obviously, I came far from it! But we'll see how I did anyway, shall we? :)

Oh, and I'm starting work again full-time on Monday (tomorrow). :w00t:
